River of Words is its own watershed: a linked network of people throughout the United States and the world who are committed to teaching the art and poetry of place to young people.
Our founders—former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass and writer and activist Pamela Michael—work closely with a small and talented staff, energetic board of directors, and dedicated volunteers in our Berkeley office. Teachers and regional coordinators implement our Watershed Explorer Educator’s Guide and organize events and workshops that engage the public and train new leaders.
River of Words is a
program of the new Center for Environmental Literacy (CEL) at Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga,
California. The Center is part of the Kalmanovitz School of Education.
