River of Words Helps to Celebrate the Brower Youth Awards
Members of the Brower family view the River of Words display at Berkeley Community Theatre.

River of Words was honored to provide a display of our wonderful art and poetry in the lobby of the Berkeley Community Theatre on September 25th for the 4th Annual Brower Youth Award ceremony. The late David Brower, one of the "grand old men" of the environmental movement, took great joy in mentoring young people during his sixty-plus years of activism. The award
program, established by Earth Island Institute (which Brower founded) in his name, recognizes six young people each year for extraordinary efforts on behalf of the planet.
Winners this year did things like establishing a statewide network of environmental activists, organizing a community to wrap chicken wire around threatened cottonwood trees to protect them from destructive beavers in the fragile Rio Grande ecosystem, inventing a processor to turn cafeteria waste cooking oil into biodiesel, then convincing a university and the city of Boulder to run their entire fleet of vehicles on the pollution-free fuel, and other such accomplishments.
