Welcome to River of Words'
Young at Art Gallery
Young at Art is one of the first art galleries in the country devoted
to children's work. It is operated by a non-profit youth organization,
called River of Words, to help support its literacy, environmental
and arts programs.
River of Words, in affiliation with The Library of Congress Center
for the Book, conducts the largest youth poetry and art contest in
the world, receiving tens of thousands of entries every year from
children ages 5-19. The Young at Art Gallery will showcase not only
children's artwork from the annual contest but their poetry as well.
Robert Hass, who co-founded River of Words with writer Pamela Michael
during his first term as US Poet Laureate in 1995, says he believes
the gallery will highlight the remarkable talent and creativity of
young people, as well as their concerns about the planet. The
arts offer kids a creative and powerful way to make sense of the world
around them, Hass comments, adding, their vision often
delights, and sometimes disturbs.
Childrens artart in generalis one of the most
potent tools for promoting cross cultural understanding and tolerance,
says River of Words/Young at Art director Pamela Michael. Our
original goal with River of Words was to promote literacy, the arts,
and environmental awareness, she continues, but after
seeing the incredible response from around the world to a series of
paintings that were entered into our annual contest from Afghan children
living in refugee camps in Pakistan last year, we realized our mission
had expanded dramatically. We began brainstorming ways to share our
remarkable collection with a wider audience, and the idea of a gallery
was born.
The gallery will sell original paintings, drawings and photographs;
high quality giclee prints; as well as notecards, and books and calendars
featuring River of Words art and poetry, published by Heyday
Books and Amber Lotus Press, respectively. Artwork, books and other
items will also be available online.
In addition to our Contest
Winners, Children of
Chernobyl, and Afghan Refugees
exhibits, we'll also feature additional shows at our Young at Art
Gallery.
