Sun Horses

As they gallop the open ridge
The sun sets behind the purple mountains
Sending streaks of gold across the sky
But none so bright as the herd

A mare stops to drink in the light
Urged on by the darkening sky
The stallion stands proud and tall
Silhouetted light, against a feathery tree

His tail streams out with glowing sparks
And seems to be held by a raging fire
Proud head held high
Eyes set as bright and fiery as embers

Streaking colts, blurs of light
Bounding fillies among the fireflies
The stallion turns his head to the sun
Alert and watchful

Sun’s final face sinks down
Stallioin screams out warning
Rearing up with thrashing hooves
Galloping, flying, racing demon

With final glow of light
Setting down
The stallion’s sun band races on
Not letting darkness’ breath touch their fiery hides
