A Stop-Motion River

A stop-motion river
Jagged lines
Flowing smoothly over jagged rocks
Over the hill
The river stops
Merges
From rift to valley
And a lake

Across the lake
Is a clay hut
The red mud smeared over the walls

Across the lake
And up the river
Is a city
Dark shades of gray
Painted across the shadows
Strewn along the ground
The flat gray surface
Sliced fresh
From the loaf of industry
Cooks the shadows where there used to be grass
A jade path from the river
To the lake

The jagged lines stop
To spell out a word

And then continue
