Geese Over Mendon Pond

The came upon us
like I, as a small child,
was always afraid
that a tornado would,
a black mass in the sky,
roaring and cackling,
the occasional high-pitched squeal
like metal on bone.
There were thousands of them,
far more than was necessary,
as if, in the sparse winter,
nature was indulging a little.
